Harold Elwin "Bo" Bice, Jr. was the runner up for the fourth season of American Idol. Growing up in the south with a large family, Bice recived the nickname "Bogart" from his grandmother, which was eventually shortened to just Bo. When he was 15, his family relocated to London, where he attended high school. While there, Bice played with several English alternative rockers and became involved with a number of high school activities. However, he dropped out of high school at age 18 to move back to Alabama and complete his GED. He eventually went professional as a musician, playing gigs across the United States and Europe. He spent extensive time playing in the nightclub circuit, both as a solo artist and as part of a number of bands. Bice favored rock music and played four instruments.
Due to his musical style and appearance as a "southern rocker", as well as being one of the oldest contestants after the age limit was raised, Bice was an unlikely contestant on American Idol. However, his early performances drew both praise and fans, making him a surprising favorite. He reached the finals, where he was crowned the runner up in the competition. After American Idol, he made several appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
Bice signed with RCA Records and released his first single in 2005. "Inside Your Heaven" was certified gold the following month. That year, he performed at Bonnaroo Music Festival and Farm Aid. He also married his long-time girlfriend several months before the couple had their first child.
At the end of the year, his debut album, The Real Thing, debuted to strong sales. His second album, See the Light, was released in 2007. The same year, he performed a song on the Blades of Glory soundtrack.
Bice hit the road in 2010 for an acoustic tour, featuring several new songs which he had written. These songs would become the core of his latest album 3, which was released independently later that year. The album included a track featuring a duet with former American Idol contestant Melinda Doolittle. He also appeared on the TV series Don’t Forget the Lyrics in October 2010, winning a $50,000 prize for his charity.
